April 28, 2016 – State of the Magazine Nation 2016: What Advertisers Want

There is constant evolution of multi-platform magazine media in a world full of choice and opportunity. We’ve put together an expert panel to help us address the question of what advertisers want.

May 27-28, 2016 – National Conference

Discover innovative business strategies, practical ideas, and creative ways to serve and connect with your community, at the 2016 National Conference in Edmonton, Alberta.

Co-hosted by Newspapers Canada, the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA) and the Association de la presse francophone (APF), the 2016 National Conference takes place on May 27–28, at the Westin Edmonton Hotel. A pre-conference welcome reception kicks off the event on Thursday night, launching into two days of inspiration from dozens of industry leaders and experts. Galas celebrating the AWNA Better Newspaper Awards, APF’s Gala des Prix d’excellence, and the National Newspaper Awards will be held on Friday evening.

The National Conference is the Canadian newspaper industry’s largest annual gathering, attracting hundreds of top-level newspaper representatives including publishers, corporate executives, editors-in-chief, advertising and marketing directors, circulation directors and heads of digital and multimedia. Industry suppliers participating as sponsors and trade show exhibitors will have access to the decision-makers from hundreds of daily and community newspapers.

partner-logo“Content marketing” is all the talk. Yet it existed 100 years ago in the form of a custom magazine for companies like John Deere. Fast forward to the present – now digital disruption has pushed this marketing approach to the forefront. Consumers are in control and that means that discoverability and sharing of your brand story are fundamentally important. Content powers SEO and content powers social media. But content is also so much more! During dinner, Eric Schneider, CEO, Tag3 will discuss the value of content marketing in context of its heritage, current relevancy and his point of view on where the future will lie. This will be an open conversation and participants are encouraged to share their own experiences. While there is no cost to register, participants pay their own way at dinner (Dutch treat). March 11 – INFO Toronto: Bitcoin

partner-logoBitcoin is a new technology that will change the world we live in, similar to how the Internet and the automobile drastically changed society. While this technology has some properties similar to a currency (it’s a medium of exchange), a stock (its value fluctuates), and a payment processor (it allows settlement between multiple parties), it can’t be pigeon-holed into any of these categories because, like other disruptive technologies, it’s different from everything invented before it. Michael will explain what Bitcoin is in plain English and will explain why it’s useful to every one of us and how it will change the world we live in more drastically and more quickly than any other technology that came before it.

Speaker: Michael Perklin is a recognized expert in cryptocurrencies and cybersecurity whose firm conducts cybersecurity audits and consultations. Michael’s expertise has been called upon by law firms, telecoms, and most recently the Canadian Senate’s Banking Committee on digital currencies. Michael serves as a Director of the Bitcoin Alliance of Canada, President of Bitcoinsultants, and President of CryptoCurrency Certification Consortium (C4).

June 10-12, 2016 – Editors Canada’s 2016 Conference

The conference committee is pleased to announce the dates, venue, and theme for Editors Canada’s 2016 conference! Join us June 10–12 at the Coast Plaza Hotel & Suites in Vancouver for a weekend of networking, learning, and fun. Conference registration will open in early 2016.

 

We will open the proceedings with a keynote address from Mary Norris. Mary began working at The New Yorker in 1978, and has been a query proofreader at the magazine since 1993. We will close the conference with a keynote speech from Bill Walsh. Bill is a night copy editor at the Washington Post.

We hope you’re as excited as we are to see, hear, and meet these two industry leaders in person in June. They will both be selling and signing copies of their books while they’re with us, so leave room in your suitcase for the trip home!
